Bea Ying Projects is pleased to announce, PARADISE, an exhibition of works by Aki Neumann. Aki Neumann’s first solo-exhibition will feature a series of eight paintings with additional sculptures and animation, all of which were created during her past year spent in Houston, TX.

Neumann’s paintings on paper tell a narrative of idyllism and suspicion through stark forms and muted tones. Surreal landscapes and interiors ranging from white to tan to black, present a suspended and floating world. Vases, snakes, mirrors, and other motifs of Orientalism reoccur within her work, underscoring the dangerous relationship between the observer and the observed in illusions of paradise.

Aki Neumann is a San Francisco Bay-Area native, born in 1992. She studied illustration at the California College of the Arts. Her work has been featured in several group-exhibitions in Oakland and San Francisco. This will be the first time a body of her work is showcased in Houston.

Neumann will be spending the upcoming year participating in a Fullbright Scholarship of Arts, based in Budapest, Hungary. She will be hosted by the University of Fine Arts Budapest and D'CLINIC Artist Residency in Zalaegerszeg.
